Spiriva is a long-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator used to ameliorate breathing among patients suffering from chronic COPD, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It works by relaxing the muscles affecting the airways, thus expanding the airways and allowing for more air to enter and exit the lungs. Spiriva is usually used with a HandiHaler device.

Follow your doctor’s exact orders when taking Spiriva. Do not take less or more than directed, or for a different period of time other than specified for you. Follow the instructions on the medication’s label.

Spiriva is used to prevent bronchospasm attacks. Do not take Spiriva to treat a bronchospasm that has already begun. Use only fast-acting inhalation drugs to treat an attack.

To learn how to use Spiriva in conjunction with an inhaler (HandiHaler), ask your doctor. Use it only with the specified inhaler as directed by your doctor. Do not take the capsule orally. Use it regularly to achieve best results.

Your doctor may ask you to undergo regular lung function tests to see if Spiriva is helping you.

Keep each Spiriva capsule in its original packaging until you are ready to use it. Discard any Spiriva tablets which are not used immediately after taking them out of the packaging.
